Roorkee Cantonment

Roorkee Cantonment is a Military Cantonment of Category II establishment, situated at Roorkee in Haridwar District of Uttarkhand State, which is one of the oldest Cantonments of India, with a large army base operating as the Headquarters of Bengal Engineer Group (BEG) which is popularly referred as Bengal Sappers, this Military Station being unique as the only army’s section having affiliation with the other two forces Navy and Air Force.

Rookie town is also famous because of its popular Institute of Technology and Research centre COER established in 1999, the Engineering college itself renowned for its excellent facilities and teaching faculty.

History

Roorkee Cantonment has its antiquity the name Rurki derived from Ruri, who was the wife of a Rajput group leader, having had its spelling as ‘Rurki’ instead of the present ‘Roorki’ around 1887.

Roorkee Cantonment was established as a Military cantonment in 1853CE in an area of 1176 acres, it has been a well spoken establishment, having constructed the Upper Ganga Canal, apart from laying roads and building bridges in this area, Roorkee  being the entrance town from Delhi to reach important destinations of Uttarkhand State, which include the famous Char-dam, covering the sacred spots of Gangotri, Yamunotri, Sri Badrinath and Sri Kedarnath, the cantonment having been situated in 75 km distance from the State capital Dehradun.

How to Reach

Roorkee Cantonment is approachable by trains and by road transport, while air travel is possible through flights up to Delhi, alternatively Jolly Grant Airport of Dehradun.

Indian Railways links Roorkee with a number of trains which include super fast and express trains, while  frequent bus services ply connecting Roorkee town to nearby and far away places, while Bus bookings can be made for inter state buses online through the Travel websites, with  facility to travel by Volvo or luxury buses is also available in plenty.

Demographics

As per 2001 Census, Roorkee Cantonment’s population is around 17,747, males constituting 61% and females 39%, with literacy rate 87%, which is above the National Average, the population of children below the age of 6 constituting 10% of the total population.

Facilities

Roorkee Cantonment Board provides water supply through 210 domestic water connections and water storage capacity of 50000 gallons, the Cantonment Board Hospital functioning under a R.M.O with the assistance of a Pharmacist and a Midwife serving people here, and one Co-education Secondary Schoolprovidingeducation up to 10th Standard in CBSE Stream.
