Ramgarh Cantonment

Ramgarh Cantonment is a Class I Category Military Cantonment established in the present Ramgarh district, earlier a section of Hazaribagh District in Jharkhand State of India, and when Ramgarh was made a new district, this Cantonment became the District Headquarters.

Ramgarh Cantonment is amidst coal fields of Laiyo, Rajrappa, Ghato, Topa, Bhurkunda, Sirka, Sayal, Urrimari, Gidi and few others and the Thermal Power Station of Patradu is in a distance of 30 km and the River Damodar flows by the side of Ramgarh , while the National Highway NH33 laid through this cantonment town.

Ramgarh Cantonment town has in its vicinity a number of shrines such Rajrappa Temple, Mata Vaishno Devi Temple, TootiJharna Temple, MaaVigneswari Temple, KilaMandir etc, as well as the Historic monuments such as Mahatma Gandhi Samadhi sthal, FasiyahiBarh, PhansiGha, Rajendar Park and few other places , while tourists can enjoy the Nature tourism around.

History

Ramgarh Cantonment has a history of British Settling here since 18th Century, when King Shah Alam II of Ramgarh kingdom gave away the power to East India Company around 1740CE, when onwards military districts of Nagpur, Hazaribagh, Palamoo, Chatra, Kodam and Giridh were formed with Ramgarh battalion kept as the Headquarters.

During 1811 and subsequent periods Ramgarh battalion had been used by British Army  for controlling variety of revolts around this area, while during Second World War Chinese X Force had their training camp here, later years this Military Camp getting stabilised, although only in 1941 Ramgarh Cantonment Council was formalised.

How to Reach

Ramgarh Cantonment is approachable by train through any of the Railway Stations around, which are Ranchi Road, Barkakana Junction, Argada and Ramgarh Cantonment Railway Stations, many fast moving trains running and halting for passenger service.
While Ramgarh Cantonment can also be reached by Road, through Public transport provided by the State Transport buses, the nearest Airport to reach this place is Ranchi Airport.

Demographics

As per 2001 Census, Ramgarh Cantonment’s population is around 73,455, males constituting 57% and females 43%, with literacy rate 68%, which is above the National Average, the population of children below the age of 6 constituting 14% of the total population.

Facilities

Ramgarh Cantonment has Banking facility through State Bank of India, while there is an ATM administered by Axis Bank helping this area, there are two hospitals, viz., Naisarai Hospital and CCL Hospital at Barkakana, serving people here, the Army School in Ramgarh Cantonment providing primary education.
