Pune Camp Cantonement

Pune Camp Cantonment  often referred as Pune Camp, is a military cantonment located in Pune, Maharashtra in India, which was established for accommodating troops of the British Indian Army, which now houses many military establishments, while Pune Camp Cantonment  is  known for its shopping centres like MG Road and East Street, its importance lies with the fact that the Army Headquarter of the Southern Command is located in this Cantonment, while National War Memorial of Southern Command is also situated here.

History

Pune Camp Cantonment , was established in 1817CE, when the British Indian Army  had already had an encampment near Mula River in Khadki, for accommodating more troops , in which process the villages of Munjeri, Mali,  Ghorpuri and Wanowrie were absorbed for building this cantonment  infrastructure, while a garrison for 4,620 troops, including two European regiments, a mountain battery, a native cavalry and three native regiments, were planned to be accommodated here at the first stage, allotting 130 acres  of space for training and drills.

Sometime afterwards, a large number of civilians started settling in the area, duly encouraged by the Military administration, since civilians could bring in more number of living facilities to troops positioned in the cantonment, while the boundaries of Pune Cantonment having been formalised in the year 1827.

How to Reach

Pune Camp Cantonment is well connected through public transport buses run by the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited, while other modes of transport such as Taxis, Autorickshaws are available in plenty at the cantonment, and also there are a number of buses plying for reaching this place from other locations, the NH-9 connecting Pune with Machilipatnam via Sholapur, and Pune with Hyderabad.

By travel by train, the nearest rail mode to the cantonment is the Pune Railway Station, while the nearest airport is the Pune Airport.

Facilities

A 100 bedded Hospital is maintained by the Pune Cantonment Board on the Sholapur Road, the Board running 3 dispensaries in the Cantonment, while a military hospital is also established in the cantonment. Besides these, there are two private Hospitals, the Ruby Hall Clinic and the Jehangir Hospital and the Sassoon Hospital, which is run by the Maharashtra State which, are nearer the cantonment.
