Morar Cantonment

Morar Cantonment, listed as one of the 62 military Cantonments of India, is situated near Gwalior, which is the district Headquarters in Madhya Pradesh state of India, is known for its involvement in the 1857 riots when the British Army men refused to take their Rifles as a protest, upon which Military action was taken against them, which laid foundation for Independence struggle movement of India.

Morar is also famous for the Sun Temple, which is considered second best in the country, the first being the one at Konark, Orissa State.
As per the Census report of 2001, Morar Cantonment carries a population of 38,881 people, of which 59% is composed of Men and the remaining 41% Women, while 15% of the population account for children under the age of 6. The literacy rate in this region is identified to be 67% on an average, while Male literacy rate is 77% and Female literacy rate is 54%.

History

Morar Cantonment was established as a Military cantonment town in 1956, classified as a Category II Establishment, managed by a Cantonment Board consisting of 14 members of which 7 are elected members, Morar being a farmer’s town, forming one of the three parts of Gwalior, the other two being Lashkar and Old Town.

Morar Cantonment houses several establishments of Indian Army, with a number of operating units installed within its confines, including a Military Hospital, Station Headquarters and other installations such as a stadium, Baaz Stadium, and a movie theatre, Baaz Cinema.

How to Reach Morar Cantonment

Morar Cantonment is approachable by railroad, Antri Railway Station Located near Morar Cantonment, belonging to North Central Railway attached to Jhansi Jn, with neighbourhood Stations of Anant Paith, Sithouli, with close by major Railway Station being Gwalior, facilitating Rail travel from other parts of the country, and Airport at Gwalior in about 26 Km distance, from where one can drive to Morar.

Facilities

Morar Cantonment Board facilitates the Cantonment residents with excellent facilities, in education, health and recreation, besides many outlets for day to day living requirements, Cantonment board itself running the Morar Cantonment Model School, with about 161 students and 5 teachers, and the Cantonment General Hospital.

There is a SBI branch functioning at Morar, with ATM facilities and the famous St. Pau’s School is situated closer to Morar Cantonment.
