History
Lansdowne Cantonment finds a place in Garhwal District of Uttarakhand, which was originally known as Kaludanda, meaning Black Hill in the local calling, later named after Lord Lansdowne in the year 1887 the then Viceroy of India, developed mainly to provide catering to the Recruits Training
Centre functioning for Garhwal Rifles force, now chosen for the Command office of Indian Army’s famous Garhwal Rifles.
It is a serene and calm hill station which anyone would love to stay for years together, although situated in a remote location at a height of 1700 metres above the Sea Level, it has well maintained motorable roads for transport, which is a welcome feature for tourists and travellers

The 2001 census of India gives information that the population of Lansdowne, Garhwal Cantonment was 7902 of which 64% was male population and 36% female population, this area having a literacy rate of 86%, which is incidentally higher than the Country’s average of 74.4%, the literacy among Males identified as 91%, while that of females 79%, and those among 6 years of age forming 9 percent of the Lansdowne, Garhwal Cantonment population.
How to reach Lansdowne, Garhwal
Lansdowne, Garhwal cantonment can be reached by Train, as there are two trains running between Delhi and Kotdwara, which are Mussoorie Express and Garhwal Express, while there are private cabs available for reaching the Cantonment area.
By road, one can reach Haridwar, from where buses are plying to Kotdwara, from which place one can rely upon cabs for transport and shared cabs are available to make the travel cost less.
