Landour Cantonment

Landour Cantonment is a small Military establishment situated near Dehradun, in the State of Uttarakhand, which is listed as one of the 62 Cantonments in India, along with its twin town Mussoorie this region is called the Queen of the Hills, the name of the place Landour was baptized by British, comparing it to a village in Carmarthenshire in South West Wales.

Landour Cantonment situated in the Lower western part of Himalayas is the among the five parallel folds in the region, about 984 ft above Mussoorie in an altitude above  6800 feet connecting the western end of Mussoorie.

Nearer Landour Cantonment one can visit Dhanaulti, a small hamlet in the east, where a shrine called Surkhanda Devi temple exists, and also visit a few other spots such as Kantalel, Chamba and Tehri, while in the western side there are few other attractions at the Border of Himachal Pradesh state.

History

Landour Cantonment initially emerged as a convalescent station for the Military, when a sanatorium was established in the year 1827 for the British Indian Army’s needs, later during 1860 only a clear distinction between Mussoorie and Landour Cantonments were drawn after the Sepoy’s mutiny of 1857 called for reorganizing efforts by the British India’s Army administration, as otherwise, the entire range starting from Burma extended through Khyber pass was referred as Bengal and Landour was shown as part of Bengal, which is hard to believe today.

Landour’s local peaks are predominant, which are referred as Tibbas, which are great sites for a tourist to see and enjoy, Landour not having much of commercial hotels, even the few are just rudimentary for  basic comforts.

How to Reach Landour Cantonment

Landour Cantonment is approachable by Road, about 290 km from New Delhi, the traveler requiring a halt at Dehradun to switch to a Taxi or a Share taxi, up to Dehradun plenty of buses available, unless one chooses to drive the entire distance.

Flights from New Delhi land at Jolly Grant Airport at Dehradun, wherefrom one can switch to a Taxi to reach Landour, likewise, Rail transport is also comfortably available up to Dehradun.

Facilities

Landour is also known for Schools for secondary education, besides the one run by Indian Army for the Cantonment children, otherwise, the place is full of houses and private homes, about 200 in number, a hillock referred as Depot Hill, in reference to Convalescent depot, a Sisters Bazaar, referring to Nurses’ Dormitory and the well-known hospital, Landour Community Hospital of American Missionaries.
