Khadki Cantonment

Khadki Cantonment is a Military Cantonments situated near Pune, in the State of Maharashtra, which is one of the 62 Cantonments in India, with an army base, besides two ordinance factories and a few breweries around, while a Military Engineering College, Kirkee War Cemetry, and a War Memorial are located in its proximity.

Khadki, which was earlier referred as Kirkee during British times, has a comprehensive market called Khadki market, a busy railway station, a Sports Stadium which has  been responsible for bringing out famous Hockey and Football teams and few other facilities spread around Khadki Cantonment.

History

Khadki Cantonment had its origin in early nineteenth century, after the Battle of Khadki which was fought by Britishers with Marathas in 1817, when the then Peshwa Baji rao was defeated by the British force, the British building up a Cantonment here, later hosting the Royal Regiment of Artilery’s 79th Commando Battery at this location.

The Kirkee War cemetery, (Khadki was then called Kirkee) established in this Cantonment commemorates about 2000 soldiers who gave their lives during wars held between 1914 and 1918, with another Memorial dedicated to 193 soldiers who were martyrs of wars between 1939 and 1945.

Khadki Cantonment has a population of 76,608 of which male female ratio is 56:44, with literacy level of 80%, while population under the age of 6 covers 11% of the above.

How to Reach Khadki Cantonment

Khadki Cantonment can be reached by all the three means of transport, viz., rail, road and air, with Khadki Railway Station established in Mumbai Pune Rail route, coming under Central Railways, with large number of trains passing through this station, and NH-9 connecting Pune with Machilipatnam and Sholapur, road transport is available for various other cities including Mumbai, buses operated by Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited plying a number of services.

Pune International Airport having good air connections, this place is also reachable by air from any part of the Globe.

Facilities

Khadki Cantonment Board provides a number of facilities, while Pune Municipal Corporation is the one supplying water to the residents of Khadki Cantonment, while Electricity supply is rendered by Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited.

Khadki Cantonment is equipped with all the civic services with modern amenities established by the Khadki Cantonment Board, while abundant facilities for education is available at Pune, Pune cantonment board runs six primary schools and three high schools for the benefit of Cantonment children

For health services, the Cantonment Board runs a 100 bedded General Hospital and three dispensaries, taking care of the Cantonment residents.
