Kanpur Cantonment

Kanpur Cantonment is known to be the largest Military establishment among 62 Cantonments in India, formed in 1811 at Kanpur district of Uttar Pradesh State of India, with the sacred river Ganges on one side and the Kanpur City on other three sides, covering approximately 4243 acres of area, with a population of 1, 08,000 approximately.

The Cantonment area of Kanpur is full of greenery, amidst which Bungalows are constructed beautifully, with various defence installations and defence units around, the Kanpur Cantonment City is taken care by the Municipal Corporation coming under Kanpur Urban Agglomeration.

History

It was in the year 1765, the Nawab Wazir of Awadh, Shuj-ud-daula, gave in to British near the Village Jajmau, which has now become Kanpur, when British shifted their Awadh local forces to this strategic location, Kanpur becoming a military station sometime in 1803.
Kanpur and Kanpur Cantonment, however, came to limelight when 1857 riots occurred around this area as the first event of India’s Independence struggle.

How to Reach Kanpur Cantonment

Kanpur Cantonment can be reached by rail and road, with National Highway 2 on Delhi-Agra-Kolkata route and National Highway No. 25 on Lucknow-Jhansi-Shivpuri section, both the Highways crossing Kanpur, while Kanpur Junction is a busy Railway station where all the major express and superfast trains stop, with some of them starting from Kanpur itself.

Kanpur’s Chakeri airport is well connected with the rest of the airports of India with frequent flight schedules enabling a traveller reach this place any time of the day or week.

Facilities

Kanpur Cantonment board takes care of the civic amenities and various facilities for the residents particularly in a place where manufacturing activities go on round the clock, which include the following

  • Sanitation is kept well by partly manual and partly mechanised operations, with three tippers exclusively assigned for collection and disposal of garbage

  • Health services through a 36 bed hospital, with a 22 bedded maternity ward, functioning with modern and latest hospital facilities

  • Wholesome drinking water supply through overhead tanks, underground water reservoir and pump houses, to all the residents except for those dedicated MES water supply is enabled

  • Education through well-established primary schools, with a nominal fee which the civic public under poor category can be benefited.

The Cantonment Board also takes care of various civic facilities which include Street lighting, road maintenance etc.
