Jalandhar Cantonment
Jalandhar Cantonment is the oldest among the 63 Cantonments of India, which was established in 1848, in the State of Punjab, when British came to North India after the first Anglo-Sikh war, the Cantonment originally intending to maintain peace and order in that region, after British departed from India and India divided into two, it gained enormous importance because of its proximity to Pakistan border, housing a recruitment Office responsible for enlisting men force for Army, Navy and Air Force.
History
Jalandhar Cantonment, although established in 1848 by British after their settlement in Northern India, maintained the Cantonment for preserving order in that area, however in 1920 there occurred mutiny by Irish Soldiers who planted the Irish Republic in place of the Union Flag, thus creating a scene demanding British to vacate Ireland, which was a protest initiated by one private called James Daly, however, they were overpowered by British loyalist soldiers, resulting in 86 of the protesters were court martialled, among whom 19 were sentenced to death.
Jalandhar Cantonment has now a population about 40,000 as identified in 2001 census of India, of which 59% constitutes Males and 41% Females, with 81% of the population literate.
How to Reach Jalandhar Cantonment
Jalandhar Cantonment is approachable in all the three means of transport, rail, road and air, Cantonment Railway Station within 2 km reach, trains halting and connecting various important destinations of the Country, for travel by road, it is along the Grant Trunk Road in a distance of 89 km from Amritsar, while 371 km away from Delhi, while the Airfield in Class-I field operating at Adampur is reachable in 19km by rail or road.
