Firozpur Cantonment

Firozpur Cantonment is one of the 62 Military establishments of the Country, located in the Firozpur district in Punjab State, next to the Firozpur City, which played a vital role during First Anglo-Sikh war which the British Indian Army took up in early times in support of the small Maharajahs of the region, now functioning as the Divisional Head Quarters of the 7th Infantry Division, XI Corps of Indian Army.

Although it is a Military establishment, most of the important administrative offices of the District are located in Firozpur Cantonment, also the residences of high officials, while the Mall Road is a long pathway where most of the Cantonment’s key activities are carried on, with most of the residential quarters situated along this road.

History

Firozpur Cantonment enjoys historical importance because it was the base for the first and few other Anglo-Sikh wars that occurred in the nineteenths century, carrying its importance further because of its vantage position, part of which has now gone to Pakistan area, although Firozpur Cantonment was considered as one of the large Cantonments of the region till the 2nd World War times, while its importance is lost over a period of time, particularly after the partition.

Among the interesting things of heritage, one may see the abandoned airstrip of British Vintage in Firozpur Cantonment, and also Gurudwara reminding the Battle of Saragarhi, in which most of the men from the adjoining areas became martyrs in the battlefield.

Demographics

The census of India taken in 2001 reveals that the population of Firozpur Cantonment was 57,418 of which 60% was male population and 40% female population, this area having a literacy rate of 75%, which is incidentally higher than the Country’s average of 74.4%, the literacy among Males identified as 80%, while that of females 68%, and those among 6 years of age forming 11 percent of the Firozpur Cantonment population.

Firozpur cantonment is equipped with the following establishment for education:

  • The Army Public School
  • Kendriya Vidyalaya Firozpur Cantt.
  • St Joseph's in the nearby city.
