Dalhousie Cantonment

Dalhousie Cantonment is one of the 62 Military cantonments established in India, located in the Chamba district in the State of Himachal Pradesh, placed at an average elevation of 1954 metres, famous for its ecological benevolence, about which the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore had commented that he had seen here splendours of paradise over the marvels of a wonder world, and this Cantonment is situated at the foot of the Dhaula Har Range of Himalayas.

Khajjar Valley amidst which Dalhousie Cantonment is established is a popular and attractive tourist spot in this region.

History

Dalhousie Cantonment was established in the year 1867 in the British India regime, now functioning as a Category IV Cantonment among the 62 Military Cantonment establishments of India, administered by a Cantonment Board consisting of 4 members of whom 2 are elected members, providing the basic facilities for the Cantonment residents, in the form of a School, a small hospital with 2 beds, and few other amenities.

Demographics

The census of India taken in 2001 reveals that the population of Dalhousie Cantonment was 1962 of which 56 % belong to male population and 44% composed of female population, this Cantonment area having a literacy rate of 76%, which is incidentally higher than the National average of 74.4%, the literacy among Males identified as 79%, while that of females 72%, and those among 6 years of age forming 14 percent of the Dalhousie Cantonment population.

Education

Dalhousie cantonment Board is maintaining a Cantonment primary School with a single teacher helping education of about 24 students.
