Chandimandir Cantonment
Chandimandir Cantonment is a Military cantonment situated in Panchkula district of Haryana State, right at the foot of the Shivalik Hills in Panchkula city, being the headquarters of Indian Army’s Western Command.
The location Chandimandir is on the North Eastern edge of the town in the Ambala-Kalka highway, with Panchkula city to its south, The Ghagghar River to its East, the locations Seketri and Mansa Devi to its West.
History
Chandimandir cantonment was established in the late 1960s, to house the Headquarters of the Western Command of Indian Army, while a new corps raised during 1971 Indo-Pak war was also positioned here till the mid 1980s, till which time the Western Army Command was operating from Shimla, at that point of time, considering the space requirements, two Corps from Shimla moved to Ambala while the Western Command moved to Chandimandir Cantonment.
Among various contributions of the Indian Army to this place for the infrastructure development, most of the trees here coveringthe foothills were planted by the Army, around the area where Chandimandir Cantonment is built.
How to Reach Chandimandir Cantonment
As Chandimandir Cantonment is situated near the junction of two highways at a point where the Chandigarh Old Panchkula highway meets the Zirakpur- Kalka highway, any traveller can reach the Cantonment by Public transport buses or by motor drive.
Chandimandir is connected by rail, with a Railway station positioned there, but not many trains stop here, however, Chandigarh railway station is a convenient Rail junction where one can alight and take a cab to reach the Cantonment location.
Chandigarh airport facilitates the traveller to reach Chandimandir Cantonment which is also not far away.
Facilities
Chandimandir Cantonment Board provides all facilities that a civic community needs to the residents, while educational facilities of Chandimandir are provided by three schools, which are two Kendriya Vidyalayas and one Army School, while there are a few Schools in the nearby Panchkula town and Chandigarh City, such as British School and Hansraj Public School in Panchkula, Delhi Public School at Pinjore which offer School education in CBSE stream, also for Plus 2 examinations.
The Chandimandir Cantonment has no colleges, but the nearby destinations Panchkula, Chandigarh and Kalka have well established colleges, for commuting to which places there are plenty of buses.
