Chakrata Cantonment

Chakrata  Cantonment is a Military establishment   which is a category III Cantonment, installed in 1869CE, administered by a Board composed of 12 members, of whom 6  are elected , while the total population  of the Cantonment residents as per 2001 Government of India census is  3499.
Chakrata town situated 98 km from the main areas of Dehradun District in Uttarakhand State, sandwiched between Mussoorie and Kinnaur in the east and west respectively, is popular for its beautiful and calm atmosphere, lying in a location at an altitude of 2,118 metres above sea level.
This town was earlier called Jaunsar Bawar, a small hamlet in which Jaunsari tribe people were the inhabitants, which included two regions, Jaunsar and Bawar, both retained as the  summer retreat for  East India Company’s officials, then access  restricted for civilians.

History

British Army Colonel Hume was responsible for forming Chakrata Cantonment in 1869 by in the present location which is at height of 135 metres, amidst Nag tibba ranges of the middle part of the Himalayas, situated at a distance of 90 Kms from Dehra Dun

The cantonment location established on a thickly wooded forest area of the Kailana range, it gives anyone spectacular view of the northern ranges, with the mountain slopes extending from about 30 degrees in the North to about 77 degrees in the East.

The northern side of Chakrata Cantonment is a fascinating landscape particularly for trekkers with its virgin of conifers, oaks and rhododendrons which enthuses the one who walks around, Chakrata on the whole abundantly blessed with natural beauty.

How to Reach Chakrata (Dehradun) Cantonment

Chakrata Cantonment is approachable by all the three modes of transport, air, rail and road, a traveler taking flights to Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, the nearest domestic airport to reach Chakrata, while international visitors can board at Indira Gandhi International Airport of New Delhi, from where one can travel by rail or road.

Dehradun Railway Station is the nearest Railway Station for Chakrata Cantonment, from where one can take a cab to reach this place, being major railway junction in this part; it is connected well with cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Lucknow and Varanasi.

Bus transport is abundantly available by buses run by both the State and private operators, while plenty of taxis are available both at Delhi and Dehradun at affordable tariff.

Facilities

Chakrata cantonment board offers all the civic amenities to the residents particularly in the form of two primary schools and one High School, giving free education including free books distribution.
