Belgaum Cantonment

Belgaum Cantonment is one of the 62 Military Cantonments, situated in Karnataka State, comprising of two zones which are referred as  the main Cantonment Zone and the Fort zone, while Cantonment is situated at an elevated spot  of 2497' above sea level amidst the Sahyadri mountain range which is a section of  Western Ghats running across Belgaum region, which is endowed with  a number of hills such as Belgundi,   Rajhuns Gad, Kakati and Vaijanath  hills.

History

Britisher established Belgaum Cantonment in the year 1832 mainly attracted by its healthy climate because of its hill area features and it is today governed by the Cantonments Act, 2006, being the only Cantonment now in Karnataka State, as the other cantonment, viz.,  Bangalore Cantonment has become part of the Civic population.

Belgaum Cantonment has also a number of tourist attractions, such as the 13th Century Fort, a historic Jain Monument in the Fort, called Kamal Basadi, Ramakrishna Mission Centre where Swami Vivekananda had stayed for sometime, a Church and Cathedral, making it a tourists’ attraction too.

Belgaum Cantonment is also known for its educational facilities, housing some of the City’s oldest and famous Schools, besides giving the residents of the Cantonment and also of  the City beautiful lush green lung space, making it a  morning walkers’ paradise and a health resort.
Belgaum Cantonment can be considered a model town with its streets with well laid out drains, civic amenities and wonderful lawns conveniently positioned.

Being a Military cantonment it is maintained as the Regimental Centre of the Maratha Light Infantry, with its Junior Leaders Wing and Platoon Commander’s Wing besides other Military installations.

How to Reach Belgaum Cantonment

Belgaum Cantonment can be reached by road through the National Highway #4 which connects Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu and also through NH-4A linking Karnataka and Goa, with a number of buses running all the time from  Mumbai , Pune , Bangalore and Hyderabad.

With regard to train services Belgaum is having a Railway junction of Hubli division, many  trains connecting  important stations such as Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune and Goa.

As for the Air travel, one can reach Belgaum by air since there are regular flights to Belgaum from Mumbai, Bangalore and few other destinations.\

Facilities

Belgaum Cantonment Board provides all the civic amenities to the residents from schooling, water supply, sanitation, ably managed by a board appointed and elected representatives.

There are  Banks functioning in the premises, with ATM outlet, which are serviced by Kotak Mahindra, Karnataka etc banks, besides various facilities provided here for common facilities.
