Aurangabad Cantonment

Aurangabad Cantonment is a military cantonment established at Aurangabad City in Maharashtra State of India, the City founded by Malik Ambar in the year 1610CE.

The Aurangabad Cantonment was established in 1890CE in British India, which is functioning under a Board established by Government of India’s Ministry of Defence, while Cantonment Boards are exclusive local self managing municipal corporations formed to administer the Cantonments in India.

British India had constituted a number of Cantonment boards during 19th Century, of which 62 Cantonments are now functioning as Defense establishments incorporated under the Cantonment Act, 1924, the responsibility of local administration of the Cantonments is vested with the Cantonment Boards, membership of which is partly elected and partly appointed by the Defense department.

History

Emperor Aurangzeb’s accomplice Rao Karan singh, the King of Bikaner was granted three villages around the present Aurangabad in 1658CE, which were then named Karanpura, Padampura and Kersingpura, and after the decline of Mughal empire one Nizam Ul Mulik who was holding possession of Aurangabad area, had conflicts with Marathas, at which period the Anglo Maratha War of 1819 occurred, at the end of which, the Nizam formed the Cantonment around 1890CE with European Officers employed to train Nizam’s Army, when British army made an entry to this region, while sometime in 1903CE, British signed a treaty with Nizam leading to establishment of a proper Cantonment in Aurangabad.

How to Reach Aurangabad Cantonment

Aurangabad cantonment is approachable by all the three modes of transport; Aurangabad City is connected by Air through Aurangabad Airport, with flight schedules from almost all the destinations for India.

By rail, Aurangabad Railway station lies in Secunderabad - Manmade Section of South Central Railway network, with rail connectivity to most of the important stations in Maharashtra region, while more improvement to connectivity linking other centres of India is on progress.
National Highway 211, in Dhule –Sholapur section passes through Aurangabad, which facilitates motor transport to Aurangabad, to which City there are a number of public transport buses plying from various towns of Maharashtra.

Demographics

The Aurangabad Cantonment’s total spread is 2584 acres accommodating civil population of 19274 according to 2001 census, while the Cantonment Board Office is located at Aurangabad-Ahmednagar Highway around Aurangabad City.

Facilities

The Cantonment Board takes care of all the civic facilities such as water supply, sanitation, drainage, road maintenance etc, while particularly Aurangabad Cantonment is considered the greenest area of Aurangabad city.

Besides, Aurangabad cantonment maintains Sarvatra Ecological Park and Training Area (SEPTA), which has a nine hole golf course, apart from the facilities for imparting regular training to Army personnel, while it is the only Golf course of that dimension in Marathwada region.
