Amritsar Cantonment
Amritsar Cantonment is a Category II Cantonment among the 62 Cantonments of India situated in Amritsar district of Punjab State, located at a distance of 240 km from Chandigarh, while Amritsar City which is the main location in the region is well known for its historical importance of the Amritsar Massacre of JalianWalaBagh of 1919, besides it is a holy place for Sikhs with their Golden Temple Harmandir Sahib situated there, while most of the tourists visit this place particularly to watch the Wagah Border closing ceremony every day when Indian and Pakistan Border force observe this ceremony.
History
Amritsar Cantonment is located at Amritsar, which was established in 1856, Amritsar city in which place the Cantonment lies has a population of about 11,32,000 people, the travel distance from Punjab’s State Capital Chandigarh is about 240 km and at 32 Km distance from Pakistan’s Lahore, is also engaged in lot of commercial activities which include a vibrant market for carpets and fabrics, farm products, handicrafts of this area, and some light engineering goods, with a number of good hotels encouraging tourism throughout the year.
How to Reach Amritsar Cantonment
Amritsar Cantonment can be reached by all the three modes of transport rail, road and air, with Amritsar Railway Station having good train connections from various parts of India, while frequent buses run from various locations from all places of Punjab, Haryana and NCR destinations,the destination having been placed in NH3, while for reaching Amritsar Cantonment by air one can take a flight to Amritsar Airport.
Facilities
Amritsar Cantonment Board offers a number of facilities for the cantonment residents, who belong to bothcivil and military population, whereas Military Stations will have only Army Personnel residing, the administration of the Cantonment is done by a board consisting 14 members among whom 7 are elected and there are about 12000 families residing in the Cantonment area, while the nearby Amritsar City has large population.
The Cantonment runs a Primary School taking care of about 130 students, with teaching staff giving opportunity for co curricular activities which include vocational training, while there is a Hospital with a Labour room attached and a dispensary functioning for the benefit of residents.
The Cantonment houses a Sainik Rest House, within 2 km distance from the Airport, which can be availed by Board’s permission; however, there are a number of Hotels situated in Amritsar City which is about 12 km from the Cantonment.
