Ambala Cantonment

Ambala Cantonment is one of the 62 Cantonments of India situated in Haryana State, located 200 km away from Delhi and 50 km closer to Chandigarh, next to Ambala City in the Grand Trunk Road, which is known for producing scientific instruments for educational purposes supplied throughout the country, besides the fact that many academicians hail from this small town in Haryana.

History

Ambala Cantonment was established during British raj, which is a pivotal location to reach  Shimla through Chandigarh in the north, Uttar Pradesh in the East, Ludhiana in the West further leading to Jalandhar , Amritsar and Lahore, a typical destination where one can see wide roads with trees on  both the sides and enriched with huge colonial bungalows, having the privilege of finding place in the famous book Kim of Rudyard Kipling, while it is in this location the formation sign of Taurus with a Red Background relating Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, which area was originally undivided Punjab region, the Cantonment operating as the Headquarters for II Corps (India) which was commissioned in 1970, while it is an important base for Indian Air Force.

How to Reach Ambala Cantonment

Ambala Cantonment can be reached by rail, road and air, with Ambala Cantonment Railway Station being a prominent Railway Junction, popular trains such as Amritsar –Dadar Express, ShriGanganagar – Haridwar Express etc halting here, besides Inter city trains taking one to Ambala town from Patiala and other stations, while it has a bus Stand to which frequent buses ply from various locations from all directions of the Country as the destination is situated in the Grand Trunk Road. For reaching Ambala Cantonment by air one has to take a flight to Chandigarh which is the nearest airport within 50 km.

Facilities

Ambala Cantonment Board offers good number of facilities for the cantonment residents, who belong to both military and civil population, unlike Military Stations where only Army Personnel reside, the overall administration of the Cantonment board vested with a Station Commander designated as the Ex Officio President of the Board.

There are good number of eateries both in Ambala Cantonment and Ambala City, reputed Hotels to stay, besides taxi services for local commutation, apart from a multi specialty hospital functioning round the clock.

The Air Force School functioning in Ambala Cantonment is one enjoying good reputation, providing lot of facilities which include versatile Science laboratories,  Cafeteria, Music Room etc, besides good faculty team, although the priority of admission is for the children of Defence forces, while Civil students are also admitted.
