Tirap is bordered by Myanmar in the South, by Changlang District of Arunachal Pradesh in the East, by Dibrugarh District of Assam towards the North and by Sibasagar (Assam) and Mon (Nagaland) district in the West. Tirap gets the name from the river Tirap that initiates in the region and flows in the course to Changlang District of Arunachal Pradesh. The whole region of the area is enclosed with high hills and deep canyons

Like other tribes of Arunachal Pradesh, the Noctes, the Wanchos and the Tutsas of Tirap also do agriculture and allied activities as their occupation. Although agriculture is the main occupation of the villagers, it is of a survival nature only. Due to non availability of flat lands, people generally follow the traditional method of jhum cultivation and only a minor section in the lower area is engaged in permanent cultivation. Here jhuming is very hard, wasteful and uncertain. In this system, a patch of land is cleared, trees cut down and later burnt. The soil is then stirred with a stick and sowing of seeds is done by broad-casting. The land is abandoned after 2 or 3 years of use when it looses its fertility. This method is not only unproductive, but also leads to soil erosion and depletion of forest cover. As a result, the district is deficit in foodgrain production and depends on neighbouring areas for meeting needs of grains, vegetables and fruits.

Though the soil condition is suitable for growing many crops, the only crops grown in the District are hill-paddy, millets, chillies, tapioca, maize and a few local pulses and vegetables. Millets and maize form an essential element of the cultural life of Tirap residents and many of their festivals center around millet and maize cultivation. In recent years, due to initiatives of Agriculture and Horticulture Departments, people have also started growing fruit trees. Rice is the staple food of both the major tribes of the District.

The commonly grown vegetables and fruits are leaf-mustard, pumpkin, brinjal, chillies and some tropical fruits like jack-fruit, banana and pineapple. Tobacco is also grown in small patches for local consumption. Betel leaf (pan) is grown in Namsang and Soha areas of the District.
