Introduction

Itanagar is the capital of Arunachal Pradesh and it has its origin in late 14th century. It was then called as Mayapur. The city was capital to the Jitri dynasty. Itanagar is situated at the foot hill of Himalayas. The name Itanagar comes from the Itafort dating back in 14-15th century. Itanagar is the capital of India's largest north eastern state. Itanagar comes under the administration of Papum Pare district.

The population of Itanagar is around 34,970. The male constitute 53% and female 47% from the total number of population. The city has various tribal groups in area which include Nyishis, Adis, Galos, Apatanis and Miri's. Itanagar is located at 27.1 degree north and 93.62 degree east. The average elevation for Itanagar is of 440 meters.

The climate in Itanagar is pleasant in winters and spring that is from October to April, temperature ranges from 22 degree Celsius to 15 degree Celsius. The monsoon starts from July to September and temperature oscillates from 30 degree Celsius to 18 degree Celsius. Summer starts from May to June and in summer temperature rises to 40 degree Celsius. Even in summer the climate remains cool, as the breeze coming from Himalaya makes the summer cool. Since Itanagar is situated at the foot hills of Himalaya, the climate remains pleasant throughout the year. The best season to visit Itanagar is from October to April.

History

The history of the place dates back to ancient epic of Ramayana and Mahabharata. Itanagar is situated at the foot hills of Himalaya and is well connected to rest of the country by road and air communication. Itanagar has been capital of Arunachal Pradesh from 1974. The city is situated above 350 meter above sea level. Itanagar is also called as mini India, as there are many people staying in Itanagar who come from all over the country.

The population of Itanagar is 34,970 which constitute 53% male and 47% female. The average literacy rate of this city is 69% where male's literacy is 75% and female's literacy is 61%. Culture

The people of Itanagar are gentle and cultured Monpas of west kameng. These people received Buddhism from Padma Sambhava, the thongi trace their relationship to thousand years back, the hrusso people have their thirty generation in this city and they patronize Vaishnava scholars. The Bangni-Nishi and Tagin is the ancient Indian warrior, the Adis and Mishmis are career builders and Apatanis cultivate wet rice. Itanagar experiences all kind of people residing in harmony and peace. The Buddhist temple is the religious place that is a new beautiful yellow roofed shrine.

There are various festivals celebrated in Itanagar. Losar is New Year celebration for Monpas. This festival is celebrated for five days among the monpas. The festival is celebrated by offering prayers, hosting flags on roof top of houses, reading Buddhist scriptures and then burning butter lamps. Another festival called Reh is also celebrated by the Idu Mishimis and the attraction of this festival is the priest dance. During the Sangken people sprinkle water on each other to sign merriment among each other. The mopin festival is started by smearing rice powder on each other.
