The district of West Godavari, with Eluru as capital is one of the districts of the state of Andhra Pradesh.

The Buddhist kingdom of Vengi included Eluru also. During that time Eluru was named as Helapuri. The Chalukyas ruled this coastal part of Andhra Pradesh for a considerable longer period of time. Subsequently, the region was captured by Gajapathis and finally it fell into the hands of Sultan of Golconda. The present district of West Godavari came into existence in the year 1925.

Two types of climatic condition prevail in this district summer and rainy season. The summer continues from the month of March to June. It is very hot and humid during that part of the season. As it is situated in the coastal area, the monsoon brings much rainfall in this area. Rains come in the month of July and extend till January. The district also has excellent conditions for crop production. The economy of the district is dependent mainly on agriculture and allied activities. The tourists visit this place during the extended part of rainy season. The district has some historical spots as Eluru, Narsapur, Achanta and Gopalapurm of tourists’ interest.
