Udhampur Air Force Station

Being one of the most sensitive areas in terms of country’s security arrangements, the entire region nearby Udhampur needed the presence of an airbase for its proper monitoring. Establishment of Udhampur AFS was therefore crucial in this area with this aim to train armed forces from this place and to keep the internal security right in order while readying to counter all types of external security threats to India with best possible arrangements.

Geographically coordinating at 32°54'8"N 75°9'22"E the entire area at which this airbase locates is at an elevation of 630 meters from the sea level. Being one of the major bases at the border area of Jammu & Kashmir state, the importance of an airbase in the form of Udhampur AFS remains crucial in the national context. As this area shares an international border with neighboring country of Pakistan, increased security measures were felt ardent henceforth Udhampur AFS had been established and revamped gradually over the period to ensure that effective training as well as security plans could be incorporated for the Air Forces.

History

Purpose of establishing Udhampur AFS was a definite and clear cut indication that it was supposed to enhance all sorts of security measures in the region for safety and security of this region in particular and the entire country in general. It was aimed that this airbase would remain firm and coordinates with the neighboring airbases or helipads and or the airports for the air strike if any and needs do occur for any type of involvement in the different types of rescue operations. It was also meant to counter any possible attack. The attempt was therefore to setup this airbase that could work closely with the nearest airbases or airports like Jammu Airport, Banihal and Kathua airfields of India’s JK state amongst others.

Nearby airport from the neighboring country’s Pakistan’s Sialkot Airport too is there and located in a very close range. India’s other airbases like Dalhousie airbase of neighboring state of India’s Himachal Pradesh and one more airbase, Pathankot AFS do connect this airbase for the coordination in security measures for that an effective and strategic plan had been made to ensure the best possible security options in the border areas.

Air Force Station at Udhampur therefore has key roles to play since it was inaugurated for training as well as maintaining total adherence to the security arrangements for the nation’s growth prospective.

Runways

Udhampur AFS has welcomed gradual development soon after it was established. In fact its runway has been revamped to cater to the training and air strike needs for which effective plan was made and incorporated to bring everything right in order. It should be noted well that modernization of its runway was one such innovative plan and idea that took place in the last couple of years.

Units at Udhampur AFS

As Udhampur AFS mainly serves in the capacity of a training base in the region it has major responsibility to strengthen the India’s Air Forces. Many effective steps have been taken especially through the planned attempts to organize the security forces from the Army to Air Forces through scheduling trainings to groom the forces for future needs. It is an important reason that several Units have been already been developed that operate under the direction of Udhampur AFS to serve the country in general and this specific area in particular.
