Siachen Glacier Air Force Station
Many interesting facts are available about the Siachen Glacier AFS establishment. In fact the details about the helipad keep it apart from other rest airports of such kinds owned by the Indian Air Forces. This airbase coming in the category of a type of heliport is not planned airbase. It doesn’t have any scheduled airline service n or does it encourage maintaining Air Force trainings that can’t be possible due to the different scenario and weather conditions.
Being owned and controlled by the armed forces, Siachen Glacier AFS though make important helipad at a place which remains key center of attraction in this sensitive region. The latitude of this helipad has been recorded at 35.500000, 35 30.000000 N, N35 30 00 while the longitude, as is it recorded at 77.000000, 77 0.000000 E, E077 00 00 remain distinguishable. The field elevation of Siachen Glacier AFS is at 22,000ft., or 6,706m that make it impossible to develop all sorts of infrastructure.
History
Need was felt to develop a helipad to work as a heliport station to keep control over the Siachen Glaciers by keeping in view the security arrangements of India in the context of it sharing international border. Establishment of Siachen Glacier AFS was therefore an important outcome and initiative to maintain the security measures of the country from this region which was not easy to handle due to climatic condition for almost whole year. As it shares troubled international border, managing it with an airfield was considered important.
As Siachen Glaciers maintains low temperatures going down from the zero and at times it is not in a position for the humans to stay, the Siachen Glacier AFS differs from rest airbases owned by the Air Forces. This airbase can’t operate like the rest airports which the army controls but its existence had definitely become important henceforth government took concrete steps to maintain decorum in security forces in the border area for which full-fledged helipad had been established.
Other important purpose for which Siachen Glacier AFS had been developed by the Indian Government, dedicated to the army and security personal at the border area, was to ascertain some link is maintained for communication purposes in the border. Equally was the purpose of establishing Siachen Glacier AFS to ensure that the security forces could be helped from all possible means at the time of need and for any urgent alert or support needed from there.
Above mentioned needs couldn’t be fulfilled without a helipad whose establishment proved worthwhile in this region. Nearby airports and airbases owned or controlled by the security forces make it easy for them to maintain thorough control over the Siachen area too. Although a small helipad but Siachen Glacier AFS has important roles to play in this area for maintaining the internal security and to avoid external threats to the country from there.
Runways
No details are available about runways at the Siachen Glacier AFS. It, being a small helipad, has still no operating runway. No such development has happened here yet but this airfield might develop its own runway in the future.
Units at Siachen Glacier AFS
Being a small helipad, Siachen Glacier AFS doesn’t accommodate any Unit as such but it definitely gets controlled from the nearby Air Force bases. Nearest airports include Skardu Airport, Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport and Srinagar besides the Muzaffarabad Airport from the bordering country of Pakistan.
