Naliya Air Force Station
Established for the purpose of Indian Air Forces training and monitoring country’s security arrangements from the western border, the main aim was to keep Naliya AFS into limelight for the extensive role it has been playing to keep internal security of country well in order. Named after the Naliya town in the border state of Gujarat which shares an international border, this airbase geographically coordinates at the 23°15′40″N 068°49′36″E in Kutch district of the state.
History
Purpose of establishing Naliya AFS in Naliya town was to ensure that the country could have effective and well-planned security system from its western border that shares international border as well. Equally was it important for India to develop a mechanism for the proper security training system especially for Air Forces that could go for worthwhile operation from different locations in the country, as it has been planned strategically.
Naliya city was chosen for the establishment of Naliya AFS in Gujarat by keeping in view the accessibility of Kutch district at country’s western end and its closeness to the entire required infrastructure which country’s security forces would have required from this location. As this city had been existing from several centuries and it also came into limelight due to being the famous Jain pilgrimage center due to presence of five such temples—Abdasa Ni Panchtirthi—this town became suitable one for all sorts of future plans.
Establishing Naliya AFS was one of the key plans besides other developments like urbanization and architectural importance of this city. An airbase could add more value by making it more effective to guarantee possible security measurements in the region and to maintain peaceful environment, an airbase was incepted here. Training the future Air Forces was another important motive for which this airbase had been developed.
It is assumed that the days are not too far when Naliya AFS would emerge into one of the major commercial air travel destinations in this region when the attempts for modernization process would go in full swing and fast. It might be permitted for the commercial operation the sooner in future once this airport develops further.
An important reason for the establishment of Naliya AFS in Naliya was to ensure the keeping of security measures effective due to this city’s close proximity to nearby country of Pakistan which shares its border with this small city. This is an important Air Force station that can make everything right in order in case of any emerges or to smoothen the impromptu security arrangements when such needs occur.
By now Naliya AFS already accommodates Numbers 45 and 101 Squadrons IAF fly Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21s. Air Forces are involved in their training from this base to face any challenging situation or to suppress the security breaches of any kind.
Runways
Naliya AFS has state-of-the-art runway at which Indian Air Force flight operate to ensure trainings continue smoothly. This runway has been well maintained by the army due to this airport being owned by military team. Its runway accommodates the take-off and landing of 45 Squadron Flying Daggers, Mig-21 Bison and 101 Squadron Falcons, Mig-21M amongst others.
Units at Naliya AFS Base
Establishment of Naliya AFS for training purposes equally necessitated the setting up of Units which could best train Air Forces and keep them ready for emergencies. It was an attempt to ensure the timely security arrangement in this region in case of any security need.
