Importance of Maharajpur AFS must be understood in the context of its presence in Central part of India in Gwalior city of Madhya Pradesh. This airbase is the lone Air Force training center owned by military in two major central states of India namely Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh respectively. Located in the outskirts of Gwalior city, this airbase has historic importance and is valued for being key training center in the whole region. Importance of Maharajpur AFS also redoubles due to it being the training center cum airport being the home to Mirage 2000 Squadrons numbers 01 & 07 respectively.
The fact is undeniable that this airbase remains in the notice from the time India welcomed Mirages and this airbase became one to serve as home till now. Both the squadrons representing 40 Wing have become integral parts of Maharajpur AFS these days with so many training avenues undergoing.

It is true that some more airfields are also present in the two states of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh like airfields in Raipur, Bhopal and Mhow but they hardly have such modern and developed infrastructure that can bring them into notice.
Thoroughly developed and modernized with increased needs, Maharajpur AFS or Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia Air Terminal boasts with its total area of 29.5 acres. This airport can easily handle 200 passengers on hourly basis. It houses 150x100 meter apron that easily keeps 02 Airbus A320 besides 01 tiny aircraft at one time.
With expansion of Indian Air Forces in India, respective governments took initiative to streamline security forces in all regions of India. Establishment of Maharajpur AFS airbase nearby Gwalior city was a major step of such kind aimed to strengthen Air Force in central region. It still serves as a key training base for the Air Forces although this airport has very much become a major commercial hub after being permitted to remain open for the commercial operation as well. The airport now sees flights operating to various destinations. Having been renamed to Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Airport, erstwhile Maharajpur AFS has played crucial roles in keeping Indian security forces in order. This airport is co-owned by military and Airports Authority of India for being one with the dual identity of a military and public airport.
Situated at an elevation of 617 ft., Maharajpur AFS geographically coordinates at 26°17′36″N 078°13′40″E and maintains its operation through uniquely developed runway built from asphalt. Notable as civil enclave airport, the distance between Maharajpur AFS and nearby city of Gwalior is mere ten kilometers. This airport has identity of being one of the four airports which remain in the notice in MP state.
Maharajpur AFS operates with its modern and state of the art runways to cater to the take-off and landing needs of both Air Force training jets and the commercial flights linking Gwalior city with various other locations in the Indian subcontinent.
Unique distinction of Maharajpur AFS is that this airport is a single operational base supporting airport in the region whose two operational parallel runways now prove helpful for Indian Air Forces to continue with training activities. Became operational in 2010, the new and second runway had been conceptualized in 2006 which plays crucial role in this airport.
