Pune Airport is known for its domestic as well as international flight operations. Presently, there are only two international destinations from Pune, which are Dubai by Air India and Frankfurt by Lufthansa. Pune Airport is provided with a runway of 2535 meters long and is oriented at 10/28. The former runway is currently being used as a taxi strip by the Indian Air Force (IAF). To ease the civil operations the airport authority (AAI) constructed a 2200m X 23m parallel taxi strip on the southern part of Rwy 10/28. Moreover, the airfield is furnished with various other facilities are including night landing and navigation. There are times when the detrition between AAI and IAF over scheduled the take-off and landing of the flights at night, as Traffic Control of Pune Airport is operated by the IAF. At present the working relationship between the two parties improved as a result of which the flights could land at nights for a time being. Lohegaon Air Force Station is considered as one of the oldest air bases in India.
History
In 1997, the Pune Airport was announced as a Customs airport and got a license from the government to export specified goods. In December 2005, it was appraised as an international airport and received a grant for the clearance of passengers and luggage. In the same year, international flights were commenced, but later these flights were cancelled. At that time, Pune Airport used to handle 165 passengers daily and there was a drastic rise in the number of passengers in 2006-2007. By 2007, the number of passengers travelling from Pune Airport reached 4,309 per day, which grown into 15,00,000 per year. By the year 2010-2011, the number of passengers calculated per day reached 8,000 and still the number is growing every year.
To deem the increasing number of passengers, AAI constructed two separate terminal buildings for the arrivals and departures of international passengers, which was measured 12,000 sq.ft. The old terminal was 6500 sq.ft and was short to hold the large number of passengers and flight operations. Both the new terminals gave some relief to the passengers as well as the airport authorities, as they can now hold the increasing rush of the passengers easily. Slowly, various facilities were developed that included a parallel taxi track that is capable of accommodating nearly 8 Airbus. In 2011, the airport authorities licensed 2 aero-bridges and various passenger facilitation services like- modern spa, New conveyor belts etc.
