Hasimara Air Force Station
Having remained in the national limelight for its major and minor roles in country’s Air Force Operation, Hasimara AFS has made several effective contributions for the internal security of India from the Eastern Command. Mainly operated by the Air Forces of India, this airbase has even welcomed the operation of MIG27ML and in fact remains an important location in the country as far as the security control and operation purpose is concerned. This airbase has equally played crucial roles in the battles which India fought after its independence from the British rule. It would have remained a busy airbase during Liberation War of 1971 and is denoted with that on various occasions.
Hasimara AFS has the wonderful history ever since it had been formally established in 1969 for the India’s security forces to get trained and operate well. Historic moment arrived on October 15, 1966 with Badge Flying Swift seeing the light of the day and number 22 Squadron Indian Air Force from this airbase presented a truly charismatic impact. Most notable and historic moment was the taking off of MIG 27 of 22 Squadron from Hasimara AFS which turned this airbase an important location in the history of India’s Air Force. It was just before the major war of 1971 that this Air Force base became an exceptionally impactful in the region. This airbase having causal relation with the Kalaikunda AFB under Eastern Air Command proved crucial and historically valuable as part of the 5 Wing especially for major operations thereafter—the 1971 Operations which transformed the history of Indian subcontinent.
Bomber and transport escort, major fighter escorts and similar such operations of 1971 couldn’t be possible without Hasimara AFS support. Entire squadron had to shift to this airbase in 1975 and then to Bagdogra thereafter in the year 1978 in the process to reorganize the Indian Air Force post Liberation War of 1971.
As an important Air Force School, the completely modernized Hasimara AFS has now emerged into unique base in West Bengal state which monitors and controls the forces from the eastern Indian side. This Air Force School is strategically located in the state’s Hasimara Wing 16 in the Jalpaiguri region which has close proximity to the international borders of Bangladesh and Nepal respectively.
