Begumpet Airport is located in Begumpet which is in Hyderabad and therefore it is also called Hyderabad Airport. In the past the airport was used as both the domestic as well as International airport and in that time it was the only International airport in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Later in the year 2008 with the establishment of Rajiv Gandhi International Airport all the commercial and civil activities at Begumpet Airport were stopped. Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is now the new hub of commercial activities and it handles heavy traffic of civil flights. The commercial flight of Thai Airways International TG 330 was the last one which flew from this Airport on March 22nd 2008. The Begumpet Airport is now serving as Aviation Academy of Andhra Pradesh and it also the training centre of Rajiv Gandhi Aviation Academy. The Training Academy of IAF or Indian Air Force is also situated at Air Force Station of Begumpet Airport. The (N&SS) or Navigation and Signals School which provides basic training about Aviation to the young cadets of Indian Air Force is also based there. Begumpet is thus being exclusively used for military purposes and sometimes it is used for flights of the government officials and VIPs.
These days the political parties are requesting the Civil Aviation Ministry to open the Begumpet airport for civilians so that it can be used for commercial purposes. The airport is an ideal one for low cost civil aviation and therefore voices are raised now and then to start commercial activities at this airbase whose services are only restricted to India Air Force.
History
In the year 1930 Begumpet Airport was established in Hyderabad and the Nizam of Hyderabad used the airport for both domestic and international purposes. It was then known as the Nizam's Deccan Airways and it was among the leading airlines of India before its independence. In 1972 a new terminal was made which has now become the main operating airport which includes Rajiv Gandhi International airbase, two terminals for check in and also a common arrival module known as NTR National.
Begumpet was among the six busiest airports of India at the time it stopped all the commercial activities as the Civil Aviation Ministry announced to close this airport for civilians. The airport was equipped with thirteen parking bays and among them five was night parking bays which were enough to handle heavy traffic of flights. However the airport lacked with the night landing facility which often created problem to have direct flights for the airport as landing was not possible at nights. The capacity of Begumpet airport in terms of handling both domestic and international passenger traffic was very high and it was the highest as compared to any other Indian Airport. The airport at that time handled more than 20,000 passengers and 300 aircrafts on daily basis. It used to handle the aircraft movement of ten domestic airlines and sixteen International ones. In the year 2006 then President of United States, George W. Bush during his official tour to Hyderabad landed on Begumpet Airport.
India Civil Aviation Airshow
India's first civilian air show the 'India Aviation' which was organized by the Civil Aviation Ministry in close association of FICCI was hosted by the Begumpet Airport from 15 the to 18th October in the year 2008. Then the INDIA AVIATION 2010 was again organized as second edition in the month of March 2010 and it was also partnered by countries like USA and France. The second edition was a big one and more 40 aircraft participated in the exhibition and it was spread in the area of about 12,000 square meters. A large number of Business visitors and conference delegates participated in the event which made it very successful. The latest edition of INDIA AVIATION was organized in the year 2012 and it is also credited for its large participation.
