The Barapani Air Forse base (IATA: SHL, ICAO: VEBI) is located in Umroi, a small city located at a distance of 30km from Shillong. The foundation stone of the airport was laid at the midst of the 60th decade and a well build airport was inaugurated in the 70thdecade. The nearby barren land was then occupied by the government official in order to extend the airport by a terminal construction at a distance of 39km
