The Civil Aerodrome at Baghdogra or the Baghdogra Airport was though made for military purposes but it is open for civilians and is used for handling public flights. Baghdogra Airport is situated in the town Baghdogra which comes under Darjeeling district, located in the northern part of West Bengal. The airport is very important stoppage in this region as it links Bangalore, Chennai Guwahati, Kolkata, New Delhi and Mumbai. Thousands of tourists coming from different parts of the country and the world to explore the beauty of the famous hill stations of Kurseong, Mirik, and Kalimpong and Darjeeling make use of this airport to reach their destinations.

The infrastructure of the airport is good and it is also being upgraded. In this airport, permits are made for those foreign tourists who intend to go to Sikkim. The airport also has helicopter flights at regular intervals to Gangtok which is state capital of Sikkim.

Baghdogra Airport earlier had three only three aprons but recently two new aprons have been added to the airport so that the heavy traffic of flights can be handled easily. The aerodrome now has the parking place for at least five aircrafts and operates almost nine flights each day. The aprons are being upgraded so that there is more parking place to accommodate more aircrafts. The passenger traffic has increased considerably in the year 2008 which is a positive sign and effective measures should be adopted to revamp the airport so that it can deal with heavy traffic. Along with this proper arrangements should be dome so that the passenger’s do not face any kind of problem during their stay on the airport.

In some time Baghdogra airport will be providing night landing facility. After the permission given by the defense ministry the state government has handed over a huge 14.5 acres of land to the aviation ministry for equipping Baghdogra airport with the night landing facility. Not only this will the airport be providing an advance vision facility to the pilots so that they have clear visibility at nights. The state government is providing a huge part of the land to the airport authority for free.

The Indian military Air Force Wing is also stationed at this place which is responsible for carrying out military operations in a large area that includes Sikkim, North Bengal and even Bhutan if needed. A base hospital and a sub area of Indian Army are also located nearby. As it handles all the military air traffic of the Indian army in this region it is of great importance from the defense point of view.

Aircrafts

The fighter FL aircraft and Mikoyan-Gurevich Squadron having a Helicopter Unit are also based at this place. A Helicopter Squadron of the Indian Army is also located few kilometers away from this place.

In 1981 Kendriya Vidyalaya in AFS Baghdogra was established which is located in Siliguri which is considered the heart of Baghdogra. The campus is surrounded by natural beauty and is covered with greenery which presents spectacular image. The campus is very spacious and also has enriched library and an advance laboratory. It also has science lab for juniors and computer labs. It has a big playground for kids which have all kind of play activities necessary for the growth of the kids.
