The airport at Allahabad (IATA: IXD, ICAO: VIAL) is situated at the outskirts of the High Court city of Uttar-Pradesh Allahabad. The airport is at a distance of 12km from the main city. The airport is commonly known as Bamrauli Air Force Base. The base is serves for both military and domestic flights from various nearby airports like the Lucknow and Varanasi airport. The base serves as the headquarter for Central Air Command. But the civilian flight needs to take special permission before landing and flying in sky.

History

There are five commands of Indian Air force which are operational and Central air command is one of them. Its Headquarters are in Allahabad. The Central Air Comman was the number one operational group which began on May 27th in the year 1958 in Kolkata because government laid special emphasis on the defense of eastern border of India. In February 1966, the Central Air Command Headquarters  were moved to Allahabad as Calcutta was considered not to be a suitable location.
