Agra Airport or Kheria Air Force base is situated in Agra city of Uttar Pradesh and is used for both military and public airport. It is among the largest Indian Air Force airbases and has celebrated its sixtieth anniversary in the year 2007.This shows that it not only among the largest airbases but it is also one of the renowned ones.
History of Agra AFS
Agra AFS was established in 1947 and Commander Shivdev Singh was the in charge of this airbase of Indian Air Force. It remained as military airbase under Western Air Command for about two decades until it came under CAC or Central Air Command in the year1971.
The base has seen numerous aircraft, officers, flights, men and squadrons but still it remains the same and it is well maintained in its original look. The association of Agra Air force is sixty years old and it is very difficult task to find any pilot who has not been posted to this airbase for at least for one time in his career. The Agra Air force Station is very crucial from defense point of view and it served as the airbase of military flights like AN-32s, IL-76s, Canberras, 47 Dakotas, C-119 Packets, HS 748 'Avros', 47 Dakotas and presently it is the airbase of AWACS.
The Agra airbase is now providing the Indian Air Force a new service of in flight refueling which is only provided by this airbase in the entire Indian Sub Continent. This is regarded as a big relief for IAF as the in flight refueling service was the need of the hour.
The Technical wing of the US (United States) Army Air Force, during the World War II had equipped the airport with maintenance and supply facility and called it "Agra Air Depot". It has high storage capacity and acts as a warehouse for large number of bomber, fighter and transport aircrafts. Air Depot Group at Agra is providing its warehouse facility not only to Indian Air Forces but also to the Air Forces of allied countries like Burma and China. The airport holds great importance for its unique services which it is providing to Indian Air Force. In addition there are other reasons which add to its importance for example it is a major halt on the air transport route between Karachi and Kumming. The Agra Airport handles the military aircrafts but it is also open for civilians and handles public flights.
